8 Ways to Care for Dry Hair

 Dry hair doesn’t need to be shampooed daily ; instead, simply rinse it under a warm shower on the days you don’t shampoo. Use a vinegar and herb rinse after shampooing to restore a healthy pH balance to your scalp and relive itching. Once a week, apply a deep – conditioning hair pack to restore lustre. 

Herbal shampoo

Elderflower, marshmallow root., and rose petals help soften and condition dry hair.
 
Elderflower

125ml (4fl oz) water

1 teaspoon dried elderflower

1 teaspoon dried marshmallow root

1 teaspoon dried rose petals 

Bring the elderflowers, marshmallow root, rose petals, and water to a boil in a small covered pot. Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes. Strain, and pour into a clean bottle. Add unscented shampoo to the herbal liquid and shake well. Either use the shampoo within one week or store it for up to one month in the refrigerator.

 

 

Aromatherapy Shampoo

Sandalwood and palmarosa essential oils combined with vegetable glycerin help moisturize dry hair. 
Sandalwood and Palmarosa

20 drops sandalwood essential oil

10 drops palmarosa essential oil

1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin

60ml (2fl oz) unscented natural shampoo

60ml (2fl oz) sring water

Combine the sandalwood and palmarosa essential oils with the vegetable glycerin in a bottle and shake well. Add the unscented shampoo and spring water to the mixture and then shake again. Either use the shampoo within one week or store it for up to one month in the refrigerator.

 

Herbal rinse

As with the herbal shampoo, rose petals, chamomile, and marshmallow root are beneficial for dry hair.

2 tablespoons dried chamomile
2 tablespoon dried rose petals
2 tablespoon dried marshmallow root
500 ml (16fl oz ) water 

Chamomile oil

Bring the chamomile, rose petals, marshmallow root, and water to a boil in a covered pot. Remove from the heat and allow to sleep until cool. Strain, pour the liquid into a clean container, and shake well. Pour 125ml (4fl oz) of the rinse through your hair after shampooing. Store the remaining hair rinse in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

 

Comfrey scalp healing rinse

Chemical treatment such as perms and coloring can irritate and inflame the scalp. A herbal scalp rinse made from comfrey, nettle, and rosemary is antiseptic, astringent, and healing

2 tablespoon dried nettle
2 tablespoon dried rosemary 
2 tablespoon dried comfrey leaf
500 ml (16fl oz) water
2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Bring the herbs and water to a boil in a covered pot. Remove from the heat and allow to sleep for one hour. Strain, and add the apple cider vinegar. Apply 125ml (4fl oz) or more to your scalp after shampooing and rinsing. Store the remaining herbal rinse in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. 

Herbal vinegar rinse

Apple cider vinegar helps restore a healthy pH balance to dry hair.

1 tablespoon dried chamomile 

1 tablespoon dried rose petals

1 tablespoon dried marshmallow root

250ml (8fl oz) apple cider vinegar

Steep the herbs in the apple cider vinegar in a covered glass jar for two weeks. Strain, and pour into a clean bottle. Add one tablespoon of the rinse to 250 ml of water and pour though your hair as a final rinse after shampooing.

 

Avocado moisturizing hair pack

The natural oils in avocado make an excellent moisturizing treatment for dry hair. 

 

1 large ripe avocado

1 tablespoon honey

Mash the avocado into a smooth puree and stir in the honey. Dampen your hair with water and massage the avocado mixture into the hair. Cover with a plastic shower cap and leave in place for 30 minutes. Rinse well and shampoo. 

Fragrant oil deep conditioning treatment

Once a week, deep condition your hair and scalp to combat the damage caused by over-cleansing, heat, and chemical treatments. Sandalwood essential oil helps revitalize dry hair. To make the deep conditioner. mix a tablespoon of jojoba or almond oil with five drops of sandalwood essential oil in a small container. (if you have long hair, you may need to double the amounts). Dampen your hair with warm water and massage the oil mixture into your scalp and hair with your fingertips. If your scalp tends to be oily, apply the treatment only to the ends of your hair. Put on a shower cap and allow the oils to remain in your hair 30 minutes. Shampoo your hair to remove the oil treatment, rinse well, and apply a conditioner if necessary 

 

Honey conditioning hair pack

Honey, egg yolks, and almond oil create a rich moisturizing treatment for damaged hair. Add rosemary and lavender oils for their scalp soothing properties.

 

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon almond oil

1 egg yolk

3 drops rosemary essential oil

3 drops lavender essential oil

 

Beat together the honey, almond oil, and egg yolk. Stir in the rosemary and lavender essential oils. Dampen your hair with warm water and massage the conditioning treatment into the hair with your fingers. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap and leave the conditioning pack in place for about 30 minutes. Rinse your hair well with lukewarm water and then shampoo to remove the conditioner.
